MRRJ Boydton Release Closure Status
The Virginia Board of Local and Regional Jails currently labels the Mecklenburg facility “temporarily closed.” That state-regulator description controls how the site should be understood now. MRRJ still publishes Boydton contact and history material, but an old address or description does not establish that the satellite has reopened. Current Brunswick custody inquiries should begin with the active Alberta main facility unless MRRJ provides a new official status.
The word “temporary” also matters. It does not authorize a claim that the location is permanently shut, sold, or abandoned. It means no current release workflow should be built around Boydton while the regulator lists it as closed. The state jail directory is the right source to recheck before relying on any later reopening claim.
MRRJ Boydton Release Records
Historical records remain with the Meherrin River Regional Jail authority. If a person says they were released from Boydton, request records that identify the exact MRRJ location and event date. The cumulative booking and release entry may show whether the person left the satellite for the community, moved to Alberta, entered VADOC, or transferred to another authority. A move from Boydton to the Alberta jail would be an internal or interfacility custody event, not freedom from custody.
Ask for the booking or commitment sheet, cumulative booking and release entry, and any recorded release or transfer date, time, authority, type, or destination. Use the person's full legal name and, when available, date of birth, booking number, and approximate booking dates. MRRJ should be asked for an existing record. It does not have to create a custom narrative or a generic “release certificate.”

The release entry supplies the physical-custody fact. A court order supplies legal authority. If the case arose outside Brunswick, use the prosecuting locality shown in the record rather than assuming the Brunswick court system owns the case.
Verify a Boydton Release
Boydton does not support a current separate roster or release process in the research. Searching a live name must therefore start with the MRRJ site and its Current Offenders link, which serves the regional system. A blank result is not a released-person finding. It only means the name was not confirmed on that current display.
- Check the regulator's facility status and note the date of the check.
- Search MRRJ's current page to see whether the person is displayed in the active regional jail system.
- Call the Alberta main number and ask staff to confirm the correct MRRJ location and custody dates.
- Submit a narrow written request for the historical booking, release, or transfer entry tied to Boydton.
- Match the exit to the correct court order and follow any named transfer to the receiving authority.
Virginia VINE may retain or report a local-jail custody event, but it is not the booking and release record. An untrackable or missing VINE result does not prove community release. Ask the last known facility to explain the actual event. For a state transfer, the VADOC locator may show the institution, CCAP placement, or supervision district that followed MRRJ custody.
The Brunswick County release search describes that wider chain. It is especially useful when the record names a court, state prison, federal custodian, or another local jail.

Use Boydton's published contact only as historical facility context. Direct the records request and live operating-status question to the regional authority's FOIA officer in Alberta. That office is positioned to locate records across MRRJ operations and confirm whether a claimed Boydton event occurred while the satellite was open.

The official MRRJ records page is the written-request route. MRRJ publishes no separate fee for this record, so request an estimate under Virginia's actual-cost rules. The online contact form requires a street address for a FOIA request and offers Records and FOIA Requests as departments.
Note: A published Boydton phone number is not evidence that the satellite is open or accepting current detainees.
MRRJ Boydton Release Site History
The satellite opened in January 2013. MRRJ describes pretrial and work-release functions in its historical material. Those descriptions help explain the kinds of older records the authority may hold, but they should not be copied into a present-tense claim that people are housed or released there now.
MRRJ's own About material also conflicts on Boydton capacity. One part gives eighty, while another gives 115. The conflict should be preserved rather than resolved by guesswork. Capacity is not needed to verify one person's exit. The state regulator's current closure label is more important for a modern lookup than either historical capacity figure.

- A structured custody status that may allow approved work outside a facility. It is not full discharge.
- Temporary closure
- A current operating-status label that does not by itself decide the site's permanent future.

- An official record of a past booking, custody stay, release, or transfer that remains with the responsible authority.
Brunswick Release Facility Map
The local map contains distinct systems. MRRJ Alberta is the active regional jail. Boydton is the temporarily closed satellite in neighboring Mecklenburg County. Lawrenceville Correctional Center is a Brunswick County state prison under direct VADOC management. Brunswick CCAP is a VADOC residential community-corrections program. The old Brunswick Correctional Center is closed and should appear only as history.
This structure explains why the physical place, agency, and court locality must all be checked. A Boydton record could concern a Mecklenburg case rather than a Brunswick case. A move to Lawrenceville would be a state-custody transfer. A CCAP placement would reflect residential community corrections, not a release from all legal control. Facility names cannot be treated as interchangeable.
The distinction also determines notification. Virginia VINE handles local and regional jail custody. State-prison notification moved to NAAVI for qualifying users. Registrations do not transfer between those systems, and neither one replaces the underlying release or transfer record.
Retain Boydton Release Evidence
A closed live operation does not erase official records. The Library of Virginia's GS-08 schedule keeps cumulative booking and release records for twenty years after separation. Individual inmate-incarceration records, which can include booking sheets, history, property receipts, photographs, pretrial-release papers, parole notices, and other release documents, are generally kept for three years after separation. A pending public-record request, audit, investigation, or litigation can also affect destruction.
Those schedules do not make the full inmate file public. Virginia jail regulations require confidential personal records, and exemptions can protect medical, classification, victim, security, and other details. Ask only for the custody evidence needed. The adult booking photo and adult arrest or charge status have specific public-record rules, while sealed or expunged material may not be disclosed.
Reconstruct the event in chronological order when several records exist. The booking sheet places the person in MRRJ custody. A bond, sentencing, dismissal, or later court order states the legal authority. The release or transfer entry records the jail's physical action. A receiving-facility result then shows whether custody continued. Dates can differ because an order may precede processing or transport. Preserve each date with its label instead of choosing one as the universal “release date.”
For a Brunswick-origin case, the General District clerk may hold bond, misdemeanor, traffic, or preliminary records, while Circuit Court holds felony final orders and appeals. A Boydton stay does not prove Brunswick venue because the regional system also serves Mecklenburg and Dinwiddie. Use the charging locality and case number on the produced jail record. If the record names no locality, ask MRRJ which court or agency supplied the commitment rather than sending the request to all three counties.
A durable Boydton finding should preserve the produced MRRJ record, source, response date, and exact wording. If the authority finds no responsive record, verify spelling, identifiers, and whether the event occurred at Alberta or another jail. An old web page or secondhand memory is not a substitute for the custodian's response.
