MRRJ Alberta Release Destinations

Meherrin River Regional Jail, often shortened to MRRJ, is the active regional jail in Alberta. It serves Brunswick, Dinwiddie, and Mecklenburg Counties. That shared role matters when a person leaves the building. A person may return to the community after bond, recognizance, sentence completion, time served, dismissal, or another court-authorized event. The same person could instead move to the Virginia Department of Corrections, another local jail, federal custody, immigration custody, a court, or another placement. Only the first group is a community release. The others remain under some form of physical custody.

The jail's release or transfer entry is the best starting record for the physical exit. A Brunswick court order may explain the legal authority, but the order may come before bond processing, property return, identity checks, or review of another hold. Likewise, a name disappearing from the official Current Offenders page proves only that the name is no longer displayed there. It does not supply the destination or reason.

Confirm an MRRJ Alberta Release

Use a short chain that tests each part of the event. Start with the current listing, but do not stop at a blank result. The official MRRJ site labels its public link “Current Offenders.” No documented recent-release archive, release reason, or public display window was found. The jail record must close that gap.

1. Search the exact legal name on the MRRJ current-custody page. Match any available identity and case details.
2. Call MRRJ and ask whether the person had a community release or a transfer. Give the full name and, when known, date of birth, booking number, and approximate booking date.
3. Request the existing booking and release or transfer entry. Ask for the recorded date, time, authority, type, and destination without demanding that staff create a new report.
4. Match the event to the correct court. Brunswick General District handles many bond, misdemeanor, traffic, and preliminary matters, while Circuit Court holds felony final orders and appeals.

A current MRRJ result means the person is displayed as held at the regional jail. A blank result remains unresolved until MRRJ states what happened. A request should avoid medical, classification, victim, and security information that is not needed to verify the exit. Under the Library of Virginia schedule, cumulative booking and release records are retained for twenty years after separation, while individual inmate-incarceration records are generally retained for three years after separation. MRRJ is a jointly governed regional authority, not a Brunswick sheriff-operated county jail. The member localities formed the authority, and the Alberta main facility opened in 2012. Its published budget describes a complex with general-purpose, work-release, medical, intake, transport, classification, and special-management space. Those categories describe operations inside the jail. They are not public release labels and should not be used to infer a person's status.

The regional scope creates a second identity check. A person held in Alberta may have a Brunswick, Dinwiddie, or Mecklenburg matter. Search the prosecuting locality shown in the booking or charge information rather than assuming every MRRJ case belongs in Brunswick court. In FY2024 the regional budget reported 1,828 bookings and 1,956 releases across all three member counties. Those totals are MRRJ-wide workload, not Brunswick-only counts.

The jail also publishes in-custody substance-use, anger-management, and life-skills programs. The life-skills group includes preparation for release. Participation does not prove a discharge date, a community destination, or a post-release service. It is facility context only.

Four local correctional names can be easy to confuse. MRRJ's Alberta site is the active regional jail and the usual local custody point. Its Boydton satellite is in Mecklenburg County and is currently labeled temporarily closed by the state regulator. Lawrenceville Correctional Center is a VADOC state prison that moved from private management to direct state operation in 2024. Brunswick CCAP is a VADOC residential community-corrections placement, not a booking jail or ordinary walk-in probation office.

Geography reinforces the split. The active regional jail is in rural Alberta. The sheriff and Brunswick courts are in Lawrenceville, while the supervising District 38 office is in Emporia. Call the office that owns the record rather than the one that happens to be closest.

MRRJ Alberta Release Day

MRRJ does not publish a release hour, weekend or holiday procedure, release door, family waiting point, rideshare rule, or property-pickup process. Those details should not be borrowed from another jail using similar software. Call the published main number before travel. Ask whether release has been approved, whether processing is complete, where pickup is allowed, and whether another hold or transport remains.

The rural location also requires care with transportation plans. A state guide documents County Transit and Brunswick Express service in the broader Alberta and Lawrenceville area, but it does not name the jail as a stop. No jail-door ride should be promised. Family or support contacts should confirm the final pickup leg directly with the jail and transport provider.

The MRRJ contact page supplies the official number and address. MRRJ also warns that staff do not call asking for payment for a GPS monitoring device tied to pretrial release. If such a demand arrives, end the call and verify through the published MRRJ number, not a number supplied by the caller.

The person leaves that custodian's physical confinement for the community, sometimes under conditions or supervision.

Transfer

One facility's control ends because another authority receives the person. Custody continues.

Discharge

A sentence or custody term ends under the responsible authority's records.

Detainer

A request or legal basis for another authority to take custody, which can block a planned community release.
